History and evolution of Mallorcan leather braiding

Mastrenat is a project dedicated to reviving the art of Mallorcan leather braiding. We are working to reclaim an artistic and cultural legacy.

Mallorcan leather braiding

An art that turned into an industry

The Mallorcan tradition of leather braiding gained international recognition and became an important industrial activity in the second part of the XXth century. In fact, throughout the 1970s and 1980s, leather products were a big draw for visitors to the island.

Consequently, local entrepreneurs hired women who were skilled in the traditional technique of leather braiding and who worked from their homes. This task was mainly the responsibility of the mothers of the family, although they frequently engaged their children in the process.

Tomeu Mas, a key figure for Mastrenat

After decades of trading in Mallorcan braided leather, Tomeu Mas kept stocks of excess material in large warehouses. Thanks to his enduring passion for the craft, Mastrenat now has the opportunity to recycle all this valuable leather, preserved for decades, and use it for training courses. Mastrenat was founded and inspired by the memory of Tomeu Mas, who worked as middle-man between the village women and the factory in Inca.

We preserve our mission to use existing product. The recovery of a lost art

Mastrenat wants to perpetuate the art of Mallorcan leather braiding and honour the women who practised this craft. As a result, we aim to restore the relevance of leather braiding and, using only recycled materials, teach the traditional technique to future generations.
